Joan Cartwright Madison

SAVANNAH – Joan Cartwright Madison died October 27, 2013 after a short illness.
She was born in Savannah and, after her father's death, lived for several years at St Mary's Home. She attended Cathedral and Sacred Heart Schools and graduated from St Vincent's Academy in 1952, where she played basketball and was a BC cheerleader. She attended Armstrong Junior College, before getting married in 1954. Thereafter, she applied her boundless energies to raising her family. In 1960, she packed up her husband and 4 young children and moved to Macon until 1970, when she finally convinced her husband to move back to Savannah. Since moving to the Landings, she enjoyed playing tennis, which brought out her competitive spirit, including winning the USTA Southern sectional championships in 1993. She also had several card groups, with both old friends and new.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Thomas C Madison, and her children, Thomas C Madison Jr and his wife Jane, Theresa M Ryan, Lawrence E Madison, David A Madison, William A Madison and his partner Stephen Kicklighter, Mary M Seginack and her husband Robert, Natalie M Loftin, and Paul L Madison. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
There will be a graveside service at the Catholic Cemetery at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, October 29.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests remembrances to Hospice Savannah, Inc., St. Vincent's Academy, or St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School.

I pray that God will grant you His peace and comfort. Although I can't attend her service because of recent surgery, I will be there in spirit. My deepest sympathy to all of you. Love, Roxie Bryant

To the Madison Family, Please accept my condolences. I was sorry to read of Mrs. Madison's death. But you can take comfort that death will soon be a thing of the past. Isaiah 25:8 Jehovah God holds grieving ones especially close. Psalm 34:18 says that 'Jehovah is close to the brokenhearted, He saves those who are crushed in spirit.' May he sustain you and your family through this difficult time.

Madison Family, I was so sorry to learn of Joan’s illness and passing. She will be remembered by many as a caring and loving mother, wife and friend. When I was a teen, she always made me feel welcome in the Madison home. More recently, when my Mother’s health was failing, Joan was there to encourage and support her and Terry was there to support me. My thoughts and prayers are with you all and especially my dear friend, Terry.
